Happy New Year!

Ringing in 2013 means we are launching into a new semester here at CCC Youth! We are excited for the weeks and months ahead, and are excited to share the calendar, events, and other information with you!

All Parents of Youth, join us this Sunday, January 6th, at 6:00pm in the Youth Room (Church Office). We will go over the spring calendar, new changes, introduce our awesome Youth Volunteers, and spend some time in prayer.

Hope you all can join us!

Sunday night the CCC Youth Group had its annual Christmas party. The stockings were hung over the roaring fake fireplace, and the tacky Christmas sweaters and santa hats were out in full force. Our Youth dressed up and put on their Christmas best to see who would win the Tackiest Christmas Attire Competition. Needless to say, everyone looked awesome!  We also had a White Elephant gift exchange which had everything from an Easy-Bake Oven, to a live mouse, crickets, and red-bellied frog. It was a great time!!

Thank you to everyone who came together to make this night a fun and special time! Here are some pictures from the night.

Congrats to Tucker Woodward, our winner of the Tacky Christmas Competition! (pictured first)

Merry Christmas!

The Opus Project on Faith, Work, and Culture will set sail next Friday, Nov. 16, at 7:00 pm. In that night of conversation, we will hear details about the project and gain insight as to why such an initiative might be fitting for our church. If you missed the original post outlining Opus, be sure to take a look at that here.

Opus has a four-fold focus meant to broadly address a range of topics in our effort to nurture reflection and conversation about the church’s contribution to the flourishing of society and the renewal of all things. We call these our four focus areas:

  • Work
  • The Arts and Culture
  • Social Justice
  • The Neighborhood

As Opus unfolds in various forms, be it a class, reading group, lecture, special event, art exhibit, or whatever else, one or more of these focus areas will be in play. Ideally, on the 16th we’ll see four instantaneous conversations get started in each of these areas. Here’s a rundown of what you can expect to see from each:

  • Work – a panel discussion with four panelists from different lanes of life reflecting on the interplay between their faith and their own work. Panelists include:
-Jay Lynch, oncologist, dean of admissions, UF College of Medicine
-Sarah West, familial engineer (mom!), studied English, food crafter
-Christy Johns, recent college graduate working in horticultural science
    -Jason Coleman, neuroscientist at UF
  • Social Justice – Britt Daniel will guide a discussion with the help of a guest from a child advocacy organization. In this session, we will ponder the questions: what is social justice? how might our faith propel us to social justice? what keeps us from social justice?
  • The Neighborhood – Ken French will facilitate a conversation about who is my neighbor and what does it mean to be a good neighbor for the good of the city, both in the literal residential neighborhood and in the wider area.

There will be an RSVP card in the bulletin this Sunday, so you can indicate your intentions and whether you need childcare. For questions or more info., email me (Todd Best) at toddbest@gmail.com.

We had another great time at the Great Pumpkin Race! Last Saturday our middle schoolers ventured out onto UF’s campus in an Amazing Race style scavenger hunt. They took pictures with statues, “Tebowed” with Tebow, climbed on the “French Fries”, sang in the Union Amphitheater, and even found athletes on campus to take pictures with, all while completing challenges and searching for pumpkins. It was a great time!

Thank you to all who participated and made it a Great Pumpkin Race!                        Here are some pictures from the race:

The Great Pumpkin Race is finally here! This coming saturday our Middle Schoolers will embark on an amazing race around the campus of UF to complete challenges and solve clues to earn the most pumpkins.  After the race, we will transport from campus to the Stankunas Home where we will announce the GPR winners, hangout by the bonfire and eat dinner. All Middle School students are welcome, invite your friends!

This event will be great, but we need your help to make this the best it can be. We need at least one chaperone with each group of 5 middle schoolers. As a chaperone, you will accompany your team throughout the race, will help them locate things/places on the map, and take pictures/videos of the team to complete various challenges.

We are also in need of drivers who are willing to bring students from campus to the Stankunas Home. Please contact Drew if you are willing to participate in the Race, transporting students, or doing both! (ddonovan@christcommunitychurch.com)

When? Saturday, October 13th: Meet at O’Connell Center Gate 1 at 2:30pm; Pickup from Stankunas Home at 7:30pm

Where? Great Pumpkin Race: UF Campus; Bonfire/Dinner: Stankunas Home

Who? All Middle School Students!

What to Bring? Permission Slip (All students must bring completed); Invite your Friends!
