{"id":5793,"date":"2014-11-25T17:24:44","date_gmt":"2014-11-25T22:24:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/christcommunitychurch.com\/blog\/?p=5793"},"modified":"2014-11-25T17:24:44","modified_gmt":"2014-11-25T22:24:44","slug":"advent","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/christcommunitychurch.com\/blog\/2014\/11\/25\/advent\/","title":{"rendered":"2014 Advent Resources"},"content":{"rendered":"<blockquote><p>\u201cIn the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.\u00a0 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div id=\"attachment_5795\" style=\"width: 307px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5795\" class=\"wp-image-5795 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/christcommunitychurch.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/week1-297x300.jpg\" alt=\"Advent Week 1\" width=\"297\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/christcommunitychurch.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/week1-297x300.jpg 297w, http:\/\/christcommunitychurch.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/week1-1013x1024.jpg 1013w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 297px) 100vw, 297px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-5795\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Advent water color by Caeli Tolar<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The season of Advent officially begins this Sunday.\u00a0 What is advent?\u00a0 Advent literally means coming.\u00a0 It is the time of the year when we remember and celebrate the coming of Jesus into this world.\u00a0 How is Advent different from Christmas?\u00a0 Advent and Christmas are closely related.\u00a0 They both point us back to a specific time in human history \u2013 the birth of Jesus.\u00a0 Advent, however, has a depth to it that is not implicitly recognized in the celebration of Christmas alone.\u00a0 Advent reminds us that Jesus came and that he came for a particular purpose.\u00a0 Furthermore, Advent reminds us that not only has Jesus come, but he will come again.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some of the ways that we will celebrate Advent at Christ Community<\/p>\n<p><strong>1)\u00a0 The lighting of the Advent candles<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The theme of Advent this year is \u201cThe Word Became Flesh\u201d.\u00a0 We will follow the story of the coming of Jesus as it is revealed to us in the Gospel of John.\u00a0 Jesus is the Word.\u00a0 And the Word became flesh (John 1).\u00a0 This is what Advent is all about.\u00a0 Jesus, being fully God, humbled himself by becoming a man.\u00a0 His true identity as God Incarnate is revealed time and time again from his own lips as he confesses that he is the great \u201cI am.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And as the \u201cI am,\u201d Jesus announces that he is:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the Bread of Life (John 6)<\/li>\n<li>the Light of the World (John 8)<\/li>\n<li>the Good Shepherd (John 10)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I want to encourage you to read these passages in their full context each week and seek to grasp the weight and glory of what is being said about Jesus.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2)\u00a0 Advent artwork series<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You will notice a change in the bulletins during Advent series.\u00a0 Each week there will be new artwork provided by Caeli Tolar that will help illustrated the themes of the Advent readings.\u00a0 Pay attention as we progress through some of the great themes of the Gospel: grace, mercy, hope, and love.\u00a0 The original water colors will also go on display in the foyer.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3)\u00a0 Carols of the Coming King<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Everyone is invited to gather together on the evening of December 7 for a special worship service starting at 6:30.\u00a0 This service will include readings and songs that will focus our attention on the wonderful truth the Jesus is the king that was promised from ages past.\u00a0 Special focus will be given to the prophecies about the coming Messiah found in Isaiah.\u00a0 There will be a time of fellowship with refreshments following this service.\u00a0 This will be a great time to gather as one family and to celebrate and worship the King who has come and who is coming again.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some resources for you and your family:<\/p>\n<p><strong>1)\u00a0 Scripture Reading Suggestion<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Advent is an opportune time to contemplate the reason for the coming of Christ.\u00a0 One of the best ways to do this is to study the many different passages in Scripture that explicit tell us why Jesus came.\u00a0 Here are a few to consider over the next several weeks:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Jesus came to fulfill the Law &amp; Prophets (Matt 5:17-20)<\/li>\n<li>Jesus came to serve and give his life (Mark 10:35-45)<\/li>\n<li>Jesus came to save sinners (1 Tim 1:12-17)<\/li>\n<li>Jesus came to bear witness to the truth (John 18:33-40)<\/li>\n<li>Jesus is coming again! (Revelation 22:6-21)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>2)\u00a0 Books\/Devotionals for Advent:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Come, Thou Long-Expected Jesus: Experiencing the Peace and Promise of Christmas by Nancy Guthrie<\/li>\n<li>Why Christ Came: 31 Meditations on the Incarnation by Joel R. Beeke<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>I have read both of these and there are excellent.\u00a0 Here are two new ones for this year that look promising:<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Expected One: Anticipating All of Jesus in the Advent by Scott James<\/li>\n<li>Peace: Classic Readings for Christmas by Stephen J. Nichols<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Online Resources:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.desiringgod.org\/blog\/posts\/good-news-of-great-joy-free-advent-ebook\">Good News of Great Joy<\/a>| Desiring God just published a free e-book with daily Advent readings. It\u2019s available in PDF and other formats for Kindle, Nook, iPad, and more.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/dl.dropbox.com\/u\/1309853\/advent_guide_2009-version.pdf\">For Yonder Breaks a New and Glorious Morn!<\/a>| Christ the King Presbyterian Church published this Advent devotional (PDF) in 2009. The dates may not be accurate for 2012, but the five weekly readings can be used this year just the same.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/dl.dropbox.com\/u\/1309853\/adv-devo-Born-a-child-2010.pdf\">Born a Child and Yet a King<\/a>| The second devotional from Christ the King Presbyterian Church was released in 2010.
