\nThe people who walked in darkness
\nhave seen a great light;
\nthose who dwelt in a land of deep darkness,
\non them has light shone.
\nYou have multiplied the nation;
\nyou have increased its joy;
\nthey rejoice before you
\nas with joy at the harvest,
\nas they are glad when they divide the spoil.
\nFor the yoke of his burden,
\nand the staff for his shoulder,
\nthe rod of his oppressor,
\nyou have broken as on the day of Midian.
\nFor every boot of the tramping warrior in battle tumult
\nand every garment rolled in blood
