Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the LORD God had made.
\nHe said to the woman, \u201cDid God actually say, \u2018You shall not eat of any tree in the garden\u2019?\u201d And the woman said to the serpent, \u201cWe may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden, but God said, \u2018You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.\u2019\u201d But the serpent said to the woman, \u201cYou will not surely die. For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.\u201d So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate. Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked. And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths.
\nAnd they heard the sound of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden. But the LORD God called to the man and said to him, \u201cWhere are you?\u201d And he said, \u201cI heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked, and I hid myself.\u201d He said, \u201cWho told you that you were naked? Have you eaten of the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?\u201d The man said, \u201cThe woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me fruit of the tree, and I ate.\u201d Then the LORD God said to the woman, \u201cWhat is this that you have done?\u201d The woman said, \u201cThe serpent deceived me, and I ate.\u201d
\nThe LORD God said to the serpent,
\n\u201cBecause you have done this,
\ncursed are you above all livestock
\nand above all beasts of the field;
\non your belly you shall go,
\nand dust you shall eat
\nall the days of your life.
\nI will put enmity between you and the woman,
\nand between your offspring and her offspring;
\nhe shall bruise your head,
\nand you shall bruise his heel.\u201d
\nTo the woman he said,
\n\u201cI will surely multiply your pain in childbearing;
\nin pain you shall bring forth children.
\nYour desire shall be for your husband,
\nand he shall rule over you.\u201d
\nAnd to Adam he said,
\n\u201cBecause you have listened to the voice of your wife
\nand have eaten of the tree
\nof which I commanded you,
\n\u2018You shall not eat of it,\u2019
\ncursed is the ground because of you;
\nin pain you shall eat of it all the days of your life;
\nthorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you;
\nand you shall eat the plants of the field.
\nBy the sweat of your face
\nyou shall eat bread,
\ntill you return to the ground,
\nfor out of it you were taken;
\nfor you are dust,
\nand to dust you shall return.\u201d
\nThe man called his wife’s name Eve, because she was the mother of all living.<\/p>\n
