But aren\u2019t<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>there bad, unlawful pleasures? Certainly there are. But in calling them<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cbad pleasures\u201d I take it we are using a kind of shorthand. We mean<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cpleasures snatched by unlawful acts.\u201d It is the stealing of the apples<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>that is bad, not the sweetness. The sweetness is still a beam from the<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>glory. . . . I have tried since . . . to make every pleasure into a channel of adoration.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em> I don\u2019t mean simply by giving thanks for it. One<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>must of course give thanks, but I meant something different . . .<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Gratitude exclaims, very properly, \u201cHow good of God to give me<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>this.\u201d Adoration says, \u201cWhat must be the quality of that Being whose<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>far-off and momentary coruscations are like this!\u201d One\u2019s mind runs<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>back up the sunbeam to the sun. . . . If this is Hedonism, it is also a<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>somewhat arduous discipline.
